Bible college honours gospel star

MDANTSANE-born gospel singer Khanyisa Sabuka recently received an honorary doctorate in music from a Durban-based Bible college.

Sabuka said she had been invited by the Msindisi Bible College to their graduation ceremony where she received her doctorate on Saturday.

She said it humbled her to know people recognised what she was doing in the gospel music industry.

“I am glad I got this honorary doctorate while I am still alive and performing.

“Sometimes we honour people who have already passed on; while they were alive they never got to be celebrated. This feels good.”

She said the Bible college had researched various artists before honouring her with the doctorate.

“They saw how my music was received by the public and also my involvement in the community.”

Sabuka said it felt good to know that as an artist her work did not go unnoticed and that people recognised her for her God-given talent. She and two pastors received doctorates.

Sabuka started singing while she was still a child. Her career blossomed when she co-founded the once popular gospel outfit, Youth With Mission, in 1995.

She started her solo career in 2004 with the release of her debut album, Ezintweni Zonke.

She has released seven albums and has sold more than 250000 copies.

Her latest album released late last year, Amandl’ovuko (power of the resurrection) has been well received in the province and nationwide.

Sabuka has travelled the country blessing gospel music lovers with her music of hope and encouragement.

She has performed in many shows in the province, including the Gospel Extravaganza, Gospel Extraordinaire and the recent Easter Feast show.

Earlier this year Sabuka celebrated her 42nd birthday with her fans when she hosted a free show at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre.

On the same day she also filmed a DVD for a song from her latest album, Amandl’ovuko.

The day ended with Sabuka making a donation to a children’s home in NU14 in Mdantsane.

Sabuka said she enjoyed putting smiles on people’s faces and giving back to the community which had supported her. She said her Facebook friends had already taken to calling her Dr Khanyisa.

“People have been writing on my wall congratulating me. I feel honoured and praise God for everything that He is doing in my life,” she said. —
