EC turns up the volume

EASTERN Cape radio stations walked away with seven awards at the fourth MTN Radio Awards in Johannesburg at the weekend.

The awards, held at the Sandton Convention Centre, recognise excellence in radio. There were more than 1000 entries this year.

Commercial radio station Algoa FM scooped two awards, Zwide- based community stations KQFM and Bay FM each won one and public broadcaster Umhlobo Wenene FM won three awards.

Algoa FM’s Daron Mann’s Daron Mann Breakfast beat finalists Kieno Kammies (567 Cape Talk), Ryan O’Connor (94.5 Kfm), Guy McDonald (Good Hope FM), Bob Mabena (Kaya FM 95.9) and John Robbie (Talk Radio 702) in the best presenter: commercial category.

“This is my first nomination and I am glad I won. I am surprised but very happy. This is not just for me but also for my team who do the show with me – Charlton Tobias and Carol-Ann Kelleher. I could not have won the award if I did not have their support,” Mann said.

Mann’s colleague, Wayne Hart, won the best music show: commercial category for his Algoa FM Top 30 which he hosts every Saturday between 9am and 12pm.

KQFM’s Percy Lamani took the best news and actuality producer: community and campus category.

“God is great because he knows the effort we put in. To be nominated was an achievement on its own. This is the best of the best,” he said.

Bay FM’s Star Nyembezi won late night presenter: community and campus.

The Eastern Cape’s big winner was Umhlobo Wenene, nominated in nine categories.

There was some confusion when MC Anele Mdoda incorrectly announced Umhlobo Wenene as the Weekend Radio Show: PBS.

“I am sorry guys, I promise next year you will win the award. My aim was to correct the voice-over artist who struggled to mention the name of the show,” she said.

Station manager Pumzile Mngci, said that, while the mishap was unfortunate, they were happy with their overall achievement.

“She announced all the stations and called our programme afterwards. As we were celebrating the win there was a U-turn and she went on to joke about it. However we are happy with the three awards that we got,” he said.

“We won the my station award and we know that our listeners would never disappoint us when it comes to voting.

“Nonela Tose won the bright stars club award which is for young achievers and she has only been with us for a year. We also won an award in the daytime programme category for SJL presented by Tose and Amaza Ntshanga.”
