A fashion model and philanthropist born and raised in rural Port St Johns has been appointed as the national director of Miss Commonwealth South Africa.

Ngawethu Ka-Siphiwo, who attributes her success to being a beauty pageant product, is now on a drive to educate other young rural girls on the benefits of entering these types of competitions.

Ka-Siphiwo, who is founder and chief editor of Zingce Lifestyle Magazine, will host two workshops in Mthatha and East London in April and May where she will share information on grooming tips and how to enter the pageant.

Now based in Johannesburg, she decided to host the workshop because she wanted rural girls to also have a shot at taking the crown.

“There are many rural girls with potential, but the problem is that they do not how to enter these pageants,” said Ka-Siphiwo.

She said the workshop would cover a range of topics including sharing her pageant experience as well as the importance of grooming without spending much.

Ka-Siphiwo holds a fashion design diploma from Walter Sisulu University and besides being Miss Commonwealth 2014 other titles she’s held include Junior Miss Eastern Cape 2005, Senior Miss Nelson Mandela Bay 2005 and Miss Walter Sisulu University 2006.

She has established Home of Zingce, a company that mainly deals with skills development among young people, social upliftment projects and promotes investing in sports in remote areas.

She believes that she is where she is because of the opportunities provided by the pageants.

“I am passionate about the development of the black girl and I believe that we all have to use whatever skill or platform we have to build the rural girl and pageants are one way of driving those positive changes,” she said.

Ka-Siphiwo, who has also served in the Junior City Council of Port Elizabeth, plans to be the link in development of areas where she feels there are limited opportunities.

She wants to ensure that change is visible in communities through social upliftment projects that form part of the Commonwealth pageant.

The East London workshop will be held on April 23 at Hemmingway’s Mall. Information about the Mthatha workshop will be communicated on the Miss Commonwealth SA Facebook page. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
