Soulful East London group La Peafa, which has rocked big stages such as the Buyel’ekhaya Festival, returns to the stage today to celebrate youth month.

The 90% Local Music Live event takes place at the Ground X Music Lounge in Stirling.

Members of the group include Spokazi Nolatsho, Ays Mabusela and Thembani Gidi, who all took a break last year to focus on personal projects.

Nolatsho got married last year and started her own business while Gidi moved to Port Elizabeth and Mabusela joined Keith Ngesi Radio as a presenter.

Mabusela said the break also gave him time to focus on growing his company, Aysmaan Entertainment. He was also performing as a solo act at various events around the province.

This saw their music as a group taking a back seat. However, it will soon be a thing of the past as the group has not only reunited for the stage, but will also complete their album Soul Minded.

Mabusela said the event tonight would see them performing music from their upcoming album.

“We are all excited about our comeback. The break gave us new life and purpose and we are also motivated by the SABC’s efforts in recognising local talent,” he said.

They have performed on platforms such as the Salga Awards, Amathole Municipality’s state of the district address, Buyel’Ekhaya Festival and Eskom Chairman’s Awards in Johannesburg, among others.

“This will be an evening of celebrating the role of South African youth in the liberation struggle, while also commemorating the pain and the sacrifices that young people made so everybody can be free from the yoke of racist oppression,” Mabusela said.

The event, organised by Aysmaan Entertainment, is inspired by the SABC drive of 90% local music.

He said the event would see local DJs also paying homage to South African creatives by focusing mainly on local music.

“This event will feature fresh talent and seasoned performers in East London and its surroundings to celebrate the milestone,” he said.

Other artists expected to perform tonight include Vuyo Tyolo, Number, Cooley S, Shirley D, Kay, Singa Soga, DJ Palture, Chez and Vuo.
