Eastern Cape beauty Asande Mchunu has been crowned this year’s Miss SA Teen Commonwealth.

The Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student was crowned in Pretoria over the weekend, winning a cash prize of R15000.

The 17-year-old first-year BA student said without the support of her family and the public, she would not have won the pageant.

She thanked the SA Commonwealth Pageant’s director, Anel de Swardt-Strydom, for giving her the opportunity to be a part of the pageant.

“I aim to be the best national representative I can be,” she said.

Mchunu, who was crowned Miss Junior Teen South Africa in 2014 and Miss Port Elizabeth Teen 2015, said winning the competition meant she could continue making an impact in her community.

Commonwealth Pageants South Africa creates a platform for women of all ages to become charity and culture ambassadors within the country and abroad, and also to inspire other women to make a difference in the community.

For the pageant, each of the contestants had to submit a portfolio on charitable work they were doing in their communities.

Mchunu’s chosen charity was Imfundi Foundations, which she managed to get sponsors for and provided clothes and food to.

Mchunu will compete in Miss World Teen Commonwealth later this year.

Another Eastern Cape teenager who came out tops in the pageant was Maclear High headgirl, Zenande Funani, 18, who was named one of five Miss SA Teen Commonwealth ambassadors for 2016.

The Maclear-born Funani, who will continue doing charity work under the umbrella of Miss Commonwealth, said she was happy to be able to help change peoples’ lives.

Earlier this year, she collected more than 100 hand-sanitiser bottles for underprivileged pupils in schools around Maclear.

The town, which falls under Joe Gqabi district, had water restrictions at the time.

“I donated the hand sanitisers before entering the pageant.

“I am always coming up with ways to assist others,” Funani said.

While running for the title, Funani hosted a number of events in her small town, raising funds for a charity of her choice.
