AMOROUS hot oil massages, cosy cabarets, passionate picnic baskets and decadent dinners are some of the ways East London couples are celebrating the day dedicated to romantic love today.

Cliché or not, red roses have always played a big role on Valentine’s Day and Murambi Roses farm has been hard at work delivering thousands of them to supermarkets and florists.

“We have delivered about 15000 roses,” said owner Barbara Allen.

She is expecting the usual queues of men outside the Sunrise-on-Sea rose farm today. “People can buy their roses and then pop into the Murambi Rose Café for tea or a light lunch.”

At Tantra Thai Spa & Wellness Centre in Vincent, Pinky Chueawifet said many couples had booked the Valentines special hour-long aroma hot oil massage today. “We use warm coconut oil and two therapists massage the couple for relaxation. Afterwards is a Thai dish of egg fried rice and prawns with iced tea.”

Some lovers will be eschewing their kitchens for a romantic snack on a blanket on the beach or under a tree.

Making it easy for al fresco sweethearts is Salut Deli in Berea, which has put together pre-ordered picnic hampers of baguettes, cheese, preserves, nougat and hot chocolate.

Co-owner Robyn Spring spent Sunday evening baking beautiful heart-shaped cookies to pop in the baskets. “Picnics were something we did when we were dating,” said her husband Charles Bosman.

Also on the foodie front is a sold-out Valentine’s evening at Toast Deli tonight where Jacky Heyman’s romantic “pop-up” menu includes smoked salmon, Moroccan spiced fillet and cinnamon churros with dark chocolate. “I invited the men to supply something special to spice up the table – like roses or little gifts,” said owner Geraldine Viviers.

Theatre dates epitomise romance, especially when shows are called Luvplay – A Valentine’s Cabaret and are watched over dinner and a glass of champagne. Presented by Dramsoc and directed by Pieter Taljaard, it is for lovers of all ages to enjoy evergreen and current love songs at the Alexander Theatre.

The production reprises tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday nights.

The Arts Theatre, which has staged Valentine-themed cabarets since 2003, is also celebrating love tonight with a show called Kiss and Tell.

Directed by the accomplished trio of Amanda Bothma, Kerry Hiles and Vicky Luff, the cabaret opens tonight and runs until February 25.

For lovers on a budget, a beach walk or foot massage shows you care.
