The ANC in the Buffalo City region has welcomed more than 20 former DA members at the party’s local government elections volunteers launch.

The launch in East London was addressed by ANC national executive committee member Malusi Gigaba on Wednesday.

Regional executive committee (REC) members including regional chairman Xola Pakati and secretary Pumlani Mkolo were also in attendance.

Former DA MPL Nokonwaba Matikinca led the former DA members clad in the party’s blue T-shirts, which they later swapped for ANC regalia.

Addressing the more than 400 ANC members, Gigaba urged them to welcome the former DA members and not discriminate against them. “The ANC is the future and hope for everyone, its the only hope for future generations. We thank these members who have decided to come back where they belong. We plead with you that you welcome them with love and respect,” Gigaba said.

He said that leading up to the local government elections, people who once belonged to the ANC were welcome to return anytime.

“ANC members have respect, we treat everyone with respect so that they feel at home. The ANC was formed so that everyone can make the party their home,” he said.

Earlier in the day Gigaba and BCM REC members officially unveiled the new ANC regional offices, Dr WB Rubusana House.

The Buffalo City region programme follows that of the Amathole district which was launched last month in preparation for the elections next year.
