East London fashionistas are in for a treat this December with the launch of the first East London Fashion Walk (ELFW).

Organiser Siyanda Nela said 10 East London fashion designers would be invited to showcase their work and reach thousands of people, fashion buyers, fashion editors and the media.

“I have two friends who studied fashion but struggled to make a living with their qualifications, save working for retail shops,” said Nela.

“They were never really able to showcase their talents or skills, which got me thinking about other local designers who were maybe in the same boat. So I decided the only way up-and-coming designers can introduce themselves to their intended markets is through a fashion show.”

He said he hoped ELFW would create a boost for local designers so they would not feel the need to relocate or work for someone else.

“Glitz and glamour will be the order of the day. I know we have a tight budget but we are determined to create a classy and elegant event full of colourful and beautiful garments,” he said.

Nela said they faced many challenges in planning the event but Hemingways were providing the venue and retailer Rage were supplying shoes.

Designer Sandisiwe Dani of SandiDani Creations, who works from a communal boutique in Vincent, said the show was exciting because it meant the possibility of tapping into new markets. “This event is going to put East London on the map.”

lELFW will be held @theVenue in Hemingways on December 12. Tickets cost R150 and will be available at Computicket.
