The alleged mastermind behind the brutal torture and murder of a Grahamstown man who he suspected of stealing his laptop has been denied bail.
Magistrate Lindelwa Figlan told third-year Rhodes University student Thembani Onceya that based on the evidence during the bail application she was not convinced exceptional circumstances existed for his release.
She said there was a probability that Onceya’s release on bail could lead to “chaos in the community” and compromise his wellbeing.
Onceya, two of his brothers and two friends allegedly tortured and killed Thembalani Qwakanisa after the third-year Xhosa and anthropology student’s laptop was stolen after a late night drinking session.
Onceya and his four co-accused will appear in court again on December 5.
