Coca-Cola truck looted in Butterworth

Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa has responded to a viral video showing one of its delivery trucks being looted by residents in Butterworth.

Although the video emerged this week and instantly went viral with thousands of views and shares on Facebook, company spokeswoman Wendy Thole-Muir said the looting took place on Christmas Eve. Thole-Muir said more than 100 cases of 2-litre Sparletta Pine Nut with a retail value of about R10000 were looted from the truck.

The truck had been leaving the Msobomvu township and heading towards the Butterworth CBD.

"While the driver was stuck in traffic, members of the public cut the straps of the vehicle and pulled at the stock. Once the stock was loose, further members of the public joined and looted the truck until the driver was able to make his way through the traffic jam.

More than 100 cases were removed the vehicle in this way. The matter has been reported to the SAPS." Thole-Muir said.

Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said they had viewed the video but no arrest had been yet.
