The Selborne College first cricket team huddle up after beating Prestige College by 68 runs in their opening match of the Coca Cola Schools T20 Challenge in Stellenbosch today.
Selborne College got their Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge campaign off to the perfect start as they thumped Prestige College by 68 runs in their opening match today.

Selborne, representing the Warriors, amassed an imposing 154/3 batting first, before bowling Prestige, representing the Inland Focus Schools, all out for 86 to seal a bonus point win.

“We didn't know anything about the opponents coming into today's game so with two matches today we just happy with the first win under the belt to set us up for this afternoon,” said Selborne coach Chris Nevay.

“I was very happy with the batting effort, (Matthew) Ferrant and (Matt) Dewar batted superbly with 50s each, and our bowlers then did the rest.”

Selborne's star performers were Dewar, who scored an unbeaten 62 off 42 balls (5x4) with the bat, and Aiden van Wyk, who took a superb six wickets with the ball, that earned him a deserved man-of-the-match award.

Batting first Selborne got off to a good start thanks to openers Ferrant and Josneil Long as they shared in a 47-run stand.

Ferrant was the clear aggressor while Long played the anchor role, with Long then first man out for six, bowled by Thabo Motaung in the seventh over.

Ferrant and Dewar then continued the good start with a 33-run partnership, with Ferrant reaching his half century along the way.

Just as Selborne were looking to kick on Ferrant fell, caught by Tumelo Banda off the bowling of Ntsako Mushwana for a well played 47-ball 57 (4x4; 2x6) with Selborne 80/2 in the 13thover.

Captain Jason Raubenheimer then joined Dewar at the crease and with a settled Dewar taking centre-stage, they took Selborne to a solid total.

Having reached 141 at the start of the last over, Raubenheimer (18) was caught by Banda off Mbongeni Kaba off the first ball to end a solid 61-run partnership, but it only brought Dewar back on strike as they crossed during the catch, and he plundered 13 runs off the final five balls, taking himself past 50 and getting Selborne to a total that proved far too much for Prestige.

The Prestige chase got off to a disastrous start as they lost two wickets in the opening over.

Selborne opening bowler Christian Schluter had Motaung caught by Raubenheimer for a golden duck off the first ball and then Tristan Alexander and keeper Dylan Deetlefs combined to run out Thabang Baloyi  (one) off the fifth to leave Prestige 2/1 after one over.

Opener Polite Shingange (23) and Banda (35) then tried to drag Prestige back into the game with a patient 56-run partnership off 71 balls, but once Van Wyk broke the stand in the 13thover he proceeded to tear into the batting line-up, as he removed both set men and started the collapse.

Prestige lost their final eight wickets for just 29 runs with Van Wyk finishing with superb figures of 6/13 in four overs, while Schluter 2/10 in four overs and Alexander with 2/10 off 2.3 overs backed him up well.

Selborne now turn their attention to their next match against Cobras representatives Wynberg boys this afternoon.

“Wynberg and St Stithians are going to be completely different to this first game, I think they are among the top three teams in the country, so good luck to us and hopefully we can take this momentum into those games,” said Nevay.
