Shot suspect linked to police station heist

The man killed during the shootout with police in Duncan Village this morning was one of the suspects in the brazen heist in Peddie Police Station where dozens of police-issued firearms went missing.

A police officer at the scene told the Daily Dispatch that the police were following leads "and became aware that one of the suspects is staying here", he said. Residents of Khayelitsha informal settlement in Duncan Village were this morning woken up  by the loud bang of gunshots.

DispatchLIVE understands that a group of heavily armed police arrived at the shack of one of the suspects at around 3am. "The suspect was not there," the police said. The police said after a while some of  their  members left, while some remained in the shack with the girlfriend of the suspect.

"I believe he thought all the police had left and came back to his shack. He knocked, however, when he realised that there were police inside, he opened fire. During the fire exchange the suspect was shot and killed," police reiterated. A resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said it was around 4am when she heard footsteps on top of her shack. "I was very scared. I thought it were people who had come to rob me," she said.

The resident said after a while there was silence. She said it was just after 5am when she heard multiple gunshots. "It was very scary. It was like a movie," she said.

The resident said after about 15 minutes she went to investigate."I went to knock on a shack next to mine, but the owner refused to open saying he was scared," she said. Just a few metres away from her shack laid a lifeless body of a man with visible wounds on his arms and forehead. He was lying on his back.

The DispatchLIVE team saw forensic police taking a picture of a small gun that was next to the body while others were collecting cartridges. About 30 firearms comprising  9mm, R5 rifles and shotguns were discovered missing from the police station on Tuesday morning last week when Cluster Commander, Brigadier Kanuka, did  an inspection and found  the firearms were missing. Residents say about 15 shots were fired during a gunfire exchange.
