Buffalo City Metro ANC Ward 13 councillor Nokulunga Matiwane has been arrested in connection with the murder of two women in Dice township in Reeston.
Her arrest comes after her husband, Mabuto Matiwane, was arrested and appeared in court for allegedly killing Nomboniso Twana, 54, and Nombulelo Mpitipiti, 50, on Tuesday.
Matiwane, who was sworn in as a councillor after last year’s local government elections, was arrested on Thursday.
This was confirmed by East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala yesterday.
“She was arrested by the Scenery Park police and is in police custody at the Fleet Street police station. She will appear in court soon.”
Mqala could not reveal the charge for Matiwane’s arrest.
Furious Dice residents protested outside the East London City Hall where a council meeting was held yesterday, calling for the councillor’s head.
They accused her of “killing our people”.
The placard-carrying crowd chanted and sang anti-Matiwane songs while the meeting was in full swing.
Group leader Nosicelo Wewe said: “We have come here to demand that the mayor fixes this mess because we have been calling and writing to him about Matiwane in vain. Look what has happened now. People are dead because of this woman.”
Mpitipiti died instantly from two bullet wounds to the head while Twana died a day later at Frere Hospital after sustaining two bullet wounds to her stomach and arm.
Meanwhile, residents who went on the rampage following the death of Twana, who was an Expanded Public Work Programme worker, set alight Matiwane’s house in Dice.
A disabled girl, aged between 15 and 17, was killed after she had been trapped inside the house. The Dispatch understands the girl was a blood relative of Matiwane.
The two deceased women were allegedly kidnapped and shot by Mabuto before their bodies were dumped over the cliff on the Buffalo Pass road on Tuesday evening.
Twana crawled into the road where she managed to flag down a passing traffic officer.
According to the Eastern Cape police, a wounded Twana managed to give a short statement identifying Matiwane as the one who pulled the trigger before she passed away in hospital. — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za
