The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the Eastern Cape has condemned the killing of the youth wing’s former general-secretary Sindiso Magaqa, whom they describe as a “brave young lion”.
A mayoral committee member of a local municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, Magaqa died on Monday afternoon at the Albert Luthuli Hospital.
He was shot in July after attending an ANC meeting. Police however, are also investigating the possibility he may have been poisoned in hospital.
This followed reports that one of Magaqa’s neighbours had said rumours were circulating that Magaqa had not died from gunshot wounds, but something more suspicious.
“It is suspected that “Super” was poisoned because he was recovering. But then he was hit by a stomach bug‚ and just died‚” the neighbour has been reported as saying.
Magaqa’s former ally and former ANCYL Eastern Cape chairman, Ayanda Matiti, who first met Magaqa in 2004, has described his passing as “extremely tragic”.
Matiti said he remembered Magaqa as a decisive leader who cherished the radical policy stance of the league he contributed in crafting during the 2011 congress in Gallagher Estate.
Magaqa beat Matiti to the general-secretary position at the conference.
But Matiti said despite the tightly-fought contest, Magaqa did not come out with an agenda to victimise him. “True to his humble and mature character, cadre Magaqa did not engage in any witch-hunt that would have wanted to victimise the Eastern Cape Youth League which I was leading.”
ANCYL provincial task team convener Mziwonke Ndabeni said: “Whilst he lived, cadre Magaqa was part of the generation of young people who defined a new path of struggle for economic freedom in our life-time.
“The generation of Sindiso Magaqa openly argued that despite the changes in political and judicial superstructure, South Africa remains under the white supremacy apartheid economic system with more than 60% of black people still living in third world poverty.”
Ndabeni said nothing could have better illustrated Magaqa’s humility, discipline and loyalty to the ANC than serving his suspension from the party in 2012, before bouncing back to lead starting at local level. He was suspended while former ANCYL president Julius Malema was expelled for ill-discipline.
“The ANCYL in the Eastern Cape wishes to send a sincere word of gratitude to his family, the ANC family and call to the law enforcement agencies to find the perpetrators of these crimes and to put and end to this senseless killing, ” Ndabeni said. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
