Private security cameras are going up in 14 Buffalo City suburbs.

The initiative by a private security company has been welcomed by police.

Red Alert said the CCTV pylons would make a big impact on tracking the movement of criminal elements and this would help patrol vehicles get to the suspects.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said they were willing to work in conjunction with the security company.

“That will assist us a lot in terms of dropping crime in the East London area,” said Mqala.

In a statement on Facebook the company said: “The cameras will be erected at strategic points in 14 suburbs to track movements of criminal elements and assist patrol vehicles through advanced communication systems.”

“The cameras are monitored live 24/7 at the Red Alert control centre.”

Brett Harvey, regional manager of Red Alert Electronic Security, said the 14 suburbs would include Sunnyridge, Greenfields, Abbotsford, Vincent, Berea, Gonubie, Nahoon, Bonnie Doon, Beacon Bay, Amalinda, Cambridge, Dorchester Heights, Nahoon Valley, Stirling and Kidd’s Beach.

A camera was installed at the bottom of Old Transkei Road on Monday.

“There are 15 units going up as we speak. They will be placed at the entrances of neighbourhoods and major intersections, forming a sort of crime barrier.

“If people know they are being watched they are less likely to commit crime,” said Harvey.

Just last month Red Alert launched their emergency app and emergency medical services division . This is a “24-hr ambulance and medical response unit with Red Alert armed response backup”.

“There is a growing trend to utilise CCTV surveillance cameras in both public and private settings where the prevention of personal and property crime is one of the main objectives.

“It is an effective deterrent to potential offenders because of the increased probability of detection and it signals improvements in the area, often leading to increased community pride, community cohesion and informal social control,” the statement said.

“We are invested in the safety and security of the residents of East London and we believe that the public deserves to feel safe in their homes and businesses.”

“These essential security upgrades will go a long way toward ensuring safer communities and peace of mind for thousands of residents.”

Harvey said Red Alert already had a great relationship with SAPS through community patrols, which they had been doing for a number of years.
