Dairy products may be cause of listeriosis- Kupelo

The Eastern Cape department of health has embarked on a routine surveillance of the listeriosis disease in both public and private hospitals.

Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said environmental health practitioners were also collecting specimens from different producers and retailers in a bid to identify the food products responsible for the outbreak.

“So far, dairy products are suspected due to positive results taken from butcheries as well as farms around Berlin,” he said.

He said the investigations were conducted in order to ensure identity of the food products consumed by those already diagnosed.

“Members of the public are urged to do basic hand washing. Proper washing food products, veggies and fruits before consumption,” he said.
