Paramedic witnesses son’s killing during robbery

A senior health official watched in horror as robbers shot and killed his son during the early hours of yesterday.

Mthatha emergency services district manager Themba Mashwabana was pistol-whipped in the face and his son, 28, whose name could not be established at the time of writing yesterday, was shot in his upper body.

Police believe the incident was a botched robbery.

Provincial police spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni said police were looking for the killers.

“The deceased and his father were accosted by three unknown gunmen when they arrived at the house of the father’s girlfriend. It is further alleged that the deceased, his father and the girlfriend were ordered at gunpoint to go outside the house and hand over the car keys and their cellphones.

“The deceased was shot and killed when he was going to fetch the car keys in the house. He sustained a gun wound on his upper body. The suspects then fled with the victims’ cellphones. One empty cartridge and one projectile of a 9mm pistol were retrieved from the scene,” Tonjeni said.

Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said Mashwabana had injuries to the face from the assault.

“The father was admitted to Mthatha Regional Hospital but has since been discharged. It is a concern for us that paramedics are attacked as there have been many incidents of such a nature, even though the father was not on duty at the time of the incident.

“One was attacked recently in Payne and we call on the police to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” said Kupelo.

Tonjeni urged anyone with information to contact Detective Warrant Officer Mzimasi Gomana on 0729526406 or Crime Stop on 0860-10111. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
