Five grandchildren, daughter witness brutal murders

An elderly Eastern Cape couple were hacked to death and the rondavel in which they were sleeping with their daughter and five grandchildren was set alight.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the incident happened at Msintsini village near Libode on Wednesday.

The 70-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife were killed in front of the children.

“Unknown people kicked open the door of the rondavel and hacked them,” Fatyela said.

Their daughter, 27, was also hacked and injured but played dead. The suspects then poured paraffin in the house and on the occupants, lit it, and then locked the door.

The daughter managed to get all the children out the burning rondavel through a window.

Fatyela said police were following strong leads. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
