Five suspected robbers were shot dead and six others arrested following a gun battle with police in Lusikisiki earlier today.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said 11 gunmen allegedly robbed a shop at Mfinizweni village near Lusikisiki at 7am.
"The owner of the shop alerted police who then chased the robbers. They were in two getaway vehicles. The robber opened fire and the police were forced to retaliate," said Fatyela.
He said villagers joined the chase and the men abandoned their vehicles and ran into a forest. Police and the villagers continue with the chase.
"Again there was a gun battled between the robber and police and two men were shot dead. Three others were shot dead later on. Six of the robbers were arrested," said Fatyela.
He said the six suspects were expected to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate's Court n on Monday charges of business robbery and attempted murder, among others.
