APRIL FOOLS' DAY: Did you believe our stories?

Did you buy our fictitious front page story about a Russian tycoon buying late president and world icon Nelson Mandela’s Qunu home? Our story “Women teach initiates how to cook and do chores” on page 3 was also untrue.

Most of our readers were not fooled at all, but there were a few who believed the stories.

Comments on DispatchLIVE, Twitter and Facebook pages ranged from “nicely done”, “wait, what?” to “a female traditional surgeon: Yhooo!”.

Some found it difficult to believe any of our stories, with one reader saying they would stop reading newspapers on April 1.

Most people reacted to the story about the sale of Mandela’s home. Most of them knew it was untrue.

Here are some of our readers’ tweets and comments:

  • That’s just a beer talk.
  • I always look forward to the Daily Dispatch April Fools’ story. The best was the mermaid found on the rocks.
  •  I was almost hurt … thanks to my calendar.
  • I thought Zuma said not to sell land to foreigners!
  • A lot of properties are usually sold on the first of April.
  • LOL … Love the buyers’ names.
  • Ja neh, thought you had us fooled. Stimela’s song goes like this – “who’s fooling who?”
  • Hahaha! I just laughed at the name “Zevodka”, Dispatch, uhamba nathi straight (you really got us) today.
  • LOL! I’ve been fooled.
  • Eish DD, it’s the second year now that I buy your stories on April Fools’ Day and you got me again. Maybe I never expect the media to prank us.
  • Love this Aprils fools’ one. You guys rock. Vodka, met eish ja!
  • You are out of order DD!
  • Nicely done by Iyana Gcugcuza, with a name that means it’s “raining, pouring”. Hahaha!
