DA condemns 'planned shooting' of PE cop and paramedic

The Democratic Alliance (DA) was swift in condemning the deaths on Wednesday night of policeman and a paramedic in Port Elizabeth’s New Brighton township in what it said “appears to have been a planned shooting”.

“Our hard-working policemen and women are committed to making our society a safer place‚” the party said in a statement on Thursday.

“Anyone who kills or injures a policeman must face the full wrath of the law and must serve as a deterrent to others.

“The DA extends its condolences to the families of the deceased.”

The Herald reported that the policeman died at the scene while his friend was declared dead on arrival at Livingstone Hospital shortly after the attack.

The shooting took place between 7pm and 7.30pm in Tshangana Street‚ about a kilometre from the Nangoza Jebe Hall in the historic Port Elizabeth area.

While details around the shooting were still sketchy late on Wednesday night‚ both official police spokesmen and officers at the scene confirmed that the two men were shot as they stood chatting in a short driveway directly outside the paramedic’s home.

While “shocked and saddened” by the killings‚ the DA said it welcomed “the arrests of 24 suspects in connection with the murder of police officers”‚ which it said emerged in a reply posed by the party’s Bobby Stevenson to safety and liaison MEC Weziwe Tikana in the Eastern Cape Legislature recently.

“She said two suspects had been successfully prosecuted‚ one to a life sentence plus 40 years and one to a life sentence‚” Stevenson said.
