People continue to flood into the Gauteng and Western Cape provinces in search of work.

Statistics South Africa released its mid-year population estimates today‚ showing that almost 55 million people now live in South Africa.

Statistics also show that Gauteng continues to grow in size‚ as does the Western Cape.

Between 2011 and 2016‚ it is estimated that 243‚118 people will have left the Eastern Cape while Limpopo will have experienced a total loss of 303‚151 people‚ Stats SA said.

Gauteng gained more than a million people from within South Africa and abroad in the same five years‚ and the Western Cape has taken in over 350‚500.

Statistician General Pali Lehlohla said the organisation did not study exactly why people flooded into Gauteng and the Western Cape‚ but it could be assumed they were hunting for jobs.

The youth‚ aged 15 or younger‚ who will be job-seeking in a few years‚ now amount to 30% of the population.

Statistics SA estimates that 3.8 million children aged 15 and younger live in KwaZulu Natal and 3.28 million youth live in Gauteng.

The state body also estimated the number of African people who entered South Africa between 2011 and 2015‚ likely job seeking‚ as just over a million in five years.

Since 1986‚ the number of white people who have left South Africa is estimated by Stats SA to be 645‚098 people.

In that same period‚ 3.9 million African people have entered the country.

Taking into account all white people who have returned to the country or or moved here from another country‚ the net loss of white people over a five-year period was 95‚158. Despite many reports of people emigrating‚ this is only about 2‚1% of the current 4.5 million white people who live in South Africa in 2015.

Overall‚ SA’s population increased by 1‚65% between 2014 and 2015‚ with Gauteng remaining the most populous province‚ with almost 13‚2 million inhabitants‚ followed by KwaZulu-Natal with a population of almost 10‚9 million. These two provinces account for about 44% of the population in the country. The Northern Cape remains the least populated province‚ with just under 1‚2 million people.
