The last of four killers of a  police officer has been arrested, tried and sentenced. Constable Mfundo Nika was killed in 2008 by hitch-hikers he gave a lift.

Bongani Mbili, 36, was the last suspect to be arrested for Nika’s murder, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder and 10 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

His co-perpetrators were Soyiso Kese, 40, Thembani Mbili, 34, and Lamla Ntshaye, 31.

The three were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstance in January 2012.

Nika was travelling from his Pakamisa home to George where he worked.  He gave a lift to four people who said they were travelling to Port Elizabeth. According to police, one of the three who were seated at the back pulled out a gun, pointed at Nika and ordered him to pull over his vehicle.

Nika ignored the orders and continued to drive on. Subsequently, he was hit over the head with the gun and was stabbed on his thigh.

Thembani Mbili, Ntshaye and Kese who were seated at the back then pulled him to the back and Bongani Mbili, who was seated at the front, jumped to the driver’s seat and took control of the vehicle.

They then drove to the Gwaba Administrative area and there Kese, Ntshaye and Thembani Mbili took Nika out the vehicle and shot him in the head.

The four then abandoned the vehicle in  Dimbaza. They were arrested for hijacking a truck carrying liquor in Keiskammahoek.

After investigations Bongani Mbili was arrested in March at Mzinto in KwaZulu-Natal.
