Komphela: ‘Defences keep you in the league‚ strikers win you matches’

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has made clear what he is looking for in the remaining days of the transfer window — a goal-scorer who will win him and his club the Premier Soccer League title come the end of the season in May.

And these‚ he points out‚ are rare and in short supply.

Answering the almost inevitable and standard question about whether Chiefs will be buying any more players before the transfer window closes on Friday afternoon‚ Komphela told reporters: “As we always say‚ if there is somebody worth bringing in‚ we shall.

“And the policy at Chiefs is clear: we are always interested in the quality that is so deserving.

“I want to raise a point with respect to the quality of strikers available in South Africa.

“A striker is very important and there are a lot of them.

“But it is all about numbers‚ about how many goals they are going to give you. The current top striker we can go for in South Africa is the one on top based on the numbers.

“I don’t want to say his name out loud because then everybody will write that we are chasing him .

“But if you are to buy a striker‚ you have to buy someone who can deliver the numbers.

“Look at the difference that Siyabonga Nomvete made when he played for Moroka Swallows under Gordon Igesund and they just missed out on winning the league .

“Look at the contribution to Chiefs‚ when we were on top and winning ‚ when Musona and Masango were consistently scoring.

“The difference in the Premier League in England right now is one striker. Why are Leicester City on top? … because of Vardy. He scored again at the weekend.

“Strikers make a difference. Defences keep you in the league‚ but strikers will win you matches‚” added Komphela.
