A police officer is fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by a car while trying to rescue someone.
A spin around the block with his boss’s motorcycle ended in destruction for East London Motorland salesman Themba Kofi, when a vehicle knocked him within minutes of taking off, leaving him with injuries to his right leg, arms and neck.

The accident happened around 8am today at Station Street a few minutes after Kofi took-off from Motorland in Cambridge Street.

According to an eyewitness, Sipho Royi, the driver of the vehicle was coming from Caxton Street and did not stop when he turned onto Station Street when he collided into the motorcyclist.

“The driver did not stop to observe at the intersection. The motorcyclist tried to evade the collision by swerving but it was too late.

The vehicle hit him on the right side and he skidded for a few metres on the road before falling off,” said Royi, a street vendor on the corner of Caxton and Station street.

When the Dispatch arrived to the scene, Kofi was being treated by a medical response team who took him to hospital for further treatment.

There were spatters of blood on the road and the driver of the vehicle was giving statement to the police.

According to Dealer Principal at Motorland, Steve Chandler, the motorcycle belongs to the owner of Motorland who gave Kofi permission to take the motorcycle for a spin every Friday morning to charge the battery.

“He has a motorcycle license and he is a good driver,” said Chandler. — arethal@dispatch.co.za
