Recovery of body sparks first EC xenophobic attack

The first xenophobic incident in the Eastern Cape has been sparked by the discovery of the body of a missing woman.

Residents of Cala near Elliot looted four foreign national owned shops after the body of Zandile Dudumashe‚ 23‚ who was known to be dating a Zimbabwean national‚ was recovered on yesterday afternoon.

The murder has led to an uprising in the community.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills confirmed that the Zimbabwean national has since been arrested.

“The situation is tense and community leaders and senior police officials are addressing the residents on the issue‚” she said.

Public order policing units have also been deployed to the area.

Eastern Cape Deputy Provincial Commissioner‚ Major-General Zamuthonga Mki has called for calm and appealed to the Cala community to trust law enforcement officers to do their work.
