SAPS to put out tenders for generators for stations

Government is to roll out generators for police stations in a bid to limit the rising wave of crime associated with load shedding.

Responding to a question in parliament‚ police minister Nathi Nhleko said: “The SAPS is in the process of putting out a tender for the procurement of mobile back-up generators to be distributed by the provinces as and where the need arises.”

Mthethwa said funding had been made available and that all “devolved” police stations would have generators by the end of the current financial year.

Police were also looking at alternatives such as “solar perimeter lighting”.

He said five police stations in the Eastern Cape — Afsondering‚ Katkop‚ Lukholweni‚ Mbizeni and Zamuxolo — were already dependent on solar power.

“Of the 1 140 police stations‚ 197 do not have generators. Of the 197 police stations‚ 184 police stations are non-devolved police stations‚ which is the responsibility of and 13 are devolved‚ which is SAPS’ responsibility‚” he said.
