Security guards take on gang of seven

A gang of thieves posing as car guards in Nahoon got more than they bargained for when they tried to take on two community patrol officers armed only with pepper spray.

The gang – estimated to be seven strong and armed with knives and rocks – attacked the Red Alert guards on Monday night at the corner of Beach Road and Old Transkei Road.

The suspects have been accused of terrorising businesses, customers and residents in the area and are allegedly responsible for several incidents of theft from motor vehicles and business and house burglaries.

Red Alert said the gang had resorted to attacking its patrol members – Chris Klokow and Errol Cijester – because they were “no longer allowed to do as they please” in the area.

The company’s community patrols manager Ed Low said: “The criminal element of Nahoon formed a gang of seven guys armed with knives and rocks and decided to attack two of our patrol guards.

“Fortunately with the help of our reaction officer Isaac Gordon who was called to assist, they managed to disperse the gang and apprehend one of them.

“We handed the suspect to police and hopefully he will talk and give up all the gang members’ names so they can all end up behind bars.”

Low said the incident occurred at 8.30pm on Monday.

Patrol guard Klokow said he and Cijester were patrolling the area on foot with when they were approached by seven men.

“Without any word I just saw a brick coming for my face and I ducked,” he said. “I took my jacket off to defend myself from the rocks and blades and we just started fighting while calling for back up.”

Klokow said the fight had gone on for some time and when the armed attackers realised the two patrol guards were not backing down, they started fleeing the scene.

The two guards managed to pin one of the attackers to the ground who was “crying to be let go”.

Cambridge police were summoned to the scene and arrested a 37-year-old man who has been charged with assault, said police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi.

“These guys they don’t want us there,” said Klokow, adding he was not scared of criminals as he had been shot, stabbed and beaten in the past.
