Several streets in Limpopo’s capital Polokwane were cordoned off ahead of the trial of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema on charges that he fraudulently benefited from a tender.
Malema’s Ratanang Trust is said to have made money out of the awarding of a tender by the provincial transport department to On-Point Engineering.
Supporters of Malema‚ claiming the charges are politically motivated‚ had gathered to back him following a night vigil.
The SABC quoted one supporter saying: “We came here to come and support the commander-in-chief because we know that he is not guilty. They are trying to fight political battles within the courts of law‚ that is why we came here to show South Africans that we are 100% behind our commander-in-chief.”
The EFF’s Floyd Shivambu has said that cabinet ministers are behind the charges.
“The Sars process has failed‚ they’re now left with only this option of criminally prosecuting him on what they allege to be corruption…This is coming from the high level team of cabinet ministers‚ Jeff Radebe‚ Maite Nkoana — Mashabana from here in Limpopo and many other including the commissioner of Sars…They said their agenda is to stop Malema‚” said Shivambu.
