Thuli to release report on MEC Majodina's trip

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is expected to release findings of her investigation into alleged misappropriation of public funds in relation to travel allowance against Arts and Culture MEC Pemmy Majodina in Pretoria today.

Congress of the People requested Madonsela to probe Majodina after she allegedly demanded and was paid more than four times the prescribed Subsistence and Travel allowance for her trip to New York in September 2012.

It was also alleged that Majodina’s chief of staff at the time‚ Nozibele Majikija‚ also irregularly received an excessive travel allowance for the same trip.

Last year – as the province’s MEC for sport‚ recreation‚ arts and culture – Majodina and an entourage reportedly spent four days in the United States to hand-deliver a SA Traditional Music Awards (Satma) invitation to human rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson. The Satma awards were hosted at the University of Fort Hare in Alice.

Madonsela is also expected to give progress reports on the investigation into alleged breach of Executive Ethics Code by Trade and Industry minister Rob Davies.

Last year the Democratic Alliance requested Madonsela to probe the spending of almost R1 million by the department of trade and industry on the launch of the Saldanha Bay Special Economic Zone during which party leader Helen Zille was heckled on the stage in October 2013.

Zille walked out of the launch after the incident‚ claiming the event‚ officially opened by president Jacob Zuma‚ was nothing but an ANC rally paid for with government funds.

The launch reportedly degenerated into a political rally‚ with ANC t-shirts sporting Zuma’s face distributed and the crowd singing songs praising Zuma.

Also present at the launch were Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel as well as ANC Western Cape leader Marius Fransman‚ who directed the programme director in his capacity as deputy minister for international relations and co-operation.

The Public Protector will also give update on other key investigations such as allegations of tender irregularities‚ financial mismanagement‚ irregular appointment and dismissal of staff by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa; allegations of unconstitutionality and maladministration regarding Operation Hlasela and the Hlasela Fund of the Free State provincial government and allegations of irregular appointment of staff and service providers and corruption in the procurement of SA Post Office’s Eco Point Office Park in Centurion.
