Vavi 'disappointed' by lack of school furniture in EC

COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says the suspension of education head Mthunywa Ngonzo is “depressing” as thousands of Eastern Cape school children will continue to have no desks while the investigation is on.

This was part of a speech Vavi prepared to deliver at Sadtu’s provincial meeting at Regent Hotel in East London later tonight.

“While not wanting to pre-judge the case, it is very disappointing that even in acting to fulfil a court order to provide furniture to 1300 schools, the department may have messed up further.

“And why on earth did the department have to wait for a judge to order that furniture be provided?”

This follows a Daily Dispatch report in March on Bhisho High Court’s ruling that the R430-million tender be reversed as it was unlawful.

The 14 service providers who were supposed to deliver thousands of desks to hundreds of schools were ordered to stop the delivery.

Education MEC Mandla Makupula put Ngonzo on precautionary suspended last Tuesday following a Treasury department’s investigation on events leading to the issuing of the tender.
