Wits academic to address health forum on ebola resilience

Wits academic Shakira Choonara will speak on resilience issues when she attends the European Development Days 2015 forum in Brussels next month.

Choonara‚ a 25-year-old PhD research fellow at the university’s Centre for Health Policy (CHP)‚ was one of 14 “Future Leaders” aged between 21 and 26 “selected to be the voice of youth in the forum’s high-level debates”.

Shakira will sit on the “Right to Health” panel with three senior World Health Organisation officials in the session “From Response to Resilience: Consolidating Efforts for a Sustainable Ebola Response towards Resilient Health Systems” on June 4.

This links in with CHP’s involvement with RESYST‚ an international research consortium funded that conducts health policy and systems research in Africa and Asia to promote health and health equity and reduce poverty.

The forum is said to attract about 5000 participants from the fields of development co-operation‚ human rights and humanitarian aid from more than 140 countries.

Choonara has received numerous research awards and has participated in a number of prestigious leadership programmes‚ including the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Youth Leadership Programme and the Emerging Voices at the Third Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Cape Town in October 2014.
