The Economic Freedom Fighters in the Eastern Cape has called on President Jacob Zuma to take a leaf out of Julius  Malema’s book and prove his innocence in a court of law.

The EFF in the province challenged Zuma to have his day in court in order to remove the "dark cloud looming over his head" over numerous allegations he faced but were never tested in a court of law.

EFF provincial legislature leader Siyabulela Peter said that the party welcomed the ruling and were hoping Zuma would one day also have his day in court.

“Zuma must stop running. He should take an example from this young leader that has allowed the rule of law to take its course.  He is an old man that should also respect law.  No one is above the law and Malema has proven that,” Peter said.

The party was responding to a ruling by the Polokwane High Court after his fraud trial was struck off the roll.

EFF’s provincial secretary Ayanda Makhongwane said the ruling had vindicated Malema and would allow for the party to continue campaigning against corruption.

“This now means that it will be easy for us to fight and talk against corruption because the dark cloud over the CIC (commander-in-chief) is no more,” Makhongwane said.

In an impromptu press briefing outside the high court, Malema  said the State had no case against him.

“The judge says I am free ... I know the state can reinstate charges‚ but I stand before all of you an innocent man without a judgment against my head‚” he said.

Handing the judgement Judge Billy Motlhe said the accused had waited for  too long. “I am not willing to subject the accused to such an ordeal,” Motlhe said.
