Gift of new shoes hands lifeline to destitute kids

Pupils  from five primary schools in a poverty-stricken township of East London will have an easier road to travel after receiving new school shoes yesterday.

Almost 400 underprivileged children from the Nontuthuzelo, Makinana, Nompum-elelo, Masakhane and Lujiza schools in Duncan Village received new footwear thanks to a R50000 donation from the Billion Group (BG).

“They identified students who were in extreme need and we purchased the correct size shoes for each of them,” said Bailey.

Sakhisizwe spokesman Nkosinathi Sikobi said the idea behind the shoe drive was to interact with local schools to meet the needs of vulnerable children in the community.

The principal at Nonthuthuzelo primary, Mphenduli Nqoma, said the donation would make a difference as pupils came from struggling families.

“Some of their parents are unemployed or depend on social grants to eke out an existence,” said Nqoma.
