Warm to hot conditions are expected in most parts of the Eastern Cape over the Christmas weekend, with light rain expected in East London late on Christmas Day.

Weather SA spokesman Garth Sampson said the thousands of holidaymakers descending on coastal resorts in the Eastern Cape and Southern Cape could expect favourable conditions over the next few days.

The forecast was for East London, Port Elizabeth and popular coastal holiday towns including Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Cape St Francis, St Francis Bay, Jeffreys Bay and Port Alfred.

On Christmas Eve, partly cloudy and hot but warm conditions are expected along the coast. Cloudy conditions are expected in the east in the evening.

On Christmas Day, partly cloudy and warm to hot weather is expected inland in the western half of the Eastern Cape, with cooler conditions expected along the coast.

Cloudy and cool weather is forecast for the eastern half of the province, with light rain expected in the Mthatha region, and in East London in the evening.

In the afternoon thundershowers are expected along the Lesotho border.

Moderate southeasterly coastal winds are expected, freshening to northeasterly by afternoon.

On Christmas Day, temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 23°C in East London, 21°C in Mthatha, and 21°C in Queenstown.

On the Day of Goodwill (Saturday), much-needed rain is forecast for the drier areas of the Eastern Cape.

“The rain should be a welcome relief in the dry areas in the east,” said Sampson.

On Sunday, cloudy and hot weather is predicted, with warm conditions along the coast and in the east, where light rain is expected.

Buffalo City Metro spokesman Keith Ngesi and Nelson Mandela Bay spokesmen Mthubanzi Mniki urged all holidaymakers to take safety precautions over the festive period.

“Buffalo City Metro is pleased by the positive manner in which people have responded to its safety campaign this festive season,” Ngesi said.

He said people had in general responded well to the BCM’s “Rave But Behave” campaign.

“We urge our people to keep it like that even during the (numerous) events that are still coming as we build up to 2016,” Ngesi added.

“All travellers must be safe on the road and obey the rules, as traffic officials will be out in full force,” said Mniki.
