A vibrant mixture of classic and contemporary gospel songs “with a message” will set the Guild Theatre alight at the album launch of one of the Eastern Cape’s most gifted artists.

East London’s Stanley Cakata, who is a member of the gospel group The Joybells, will be launching his first solo album on Saturday. The launch promises to provide an exciting variety of young and old, as he will collaborate with The Joybells, Eternal, the Mayaba Band and Glad Hope.

Cakata has been a member of the Joybells since its inception in 1982. The group has evolved over the years but the main quartet has been together for 33 years.

The group has recorded six albums and a DVD. They have performed in South Africa’s major cities like Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, as well as in Botswana.

“I have not left the Joybells. They will always be a part of me. However, I have always wanted to go solo even before I joined the Joybells, but found it challenging because I did not have a band,” says Cakata.

His dream came to life when his first born son, Kwande, graduated from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) music school.

Kwande plays the saxophone, piano and guitar.

Cakata said his son played a significant role in producing his first solo album. “Kwande’s achievement also inspired my youngest son, Kwanele, to play the piano.”

With music running in the family blood, Cakata has also decided to boost the family’s talents by showcasing them at the album launch. His brother, Ntsikelelo, is part of The Joybells.

Cakata said he was looking forward to the ministry that his music wouldl bring. “I am excited about this album because it is my personal message and ministry to communities at large.”

“I promise that the audience will be thoroughly entertained by the variety of the music we will bring. Also, there are a lot of young people performing in the accompanying bands.”

The Joybells have filled the Guild in their previous gigs.

lThe show starts at 7pm and the CD will be sold at a special of R100 on the night. Tickets at R100 are available through Computicket and at the theatre. — gugup@dispatch.co.za
