From a young age Gugu Zulu said he would be a driver.

“I asked ‘a taxi driver?’ He said ‘no’. ‘A train driver, maybe?’ He said, ‘mamsie, no. I am going to be a driver‚” his mother‚ Puleng Zulu‚ said at a memorial service for the racing driver, who died last week while attempting to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

“I don’t have the energy to stand but I want to thank God for making me a vessel‚ a giant‚ for allowing Peter and I to nurture to the fulfilment of his life purpose‚” Puleng Zulu said.

She added he was a protective and loving brother and did what he needed to do.

Gugu would encourage the family to participate in what he enjoyed‚ cycling.

“He would tell us to go cycle.

“I would ask him how will I look like when I wear shorts. He would say you must see some are overflowing.”

She described Zulu as a selfless giant.

Zulu’s mother-in-law, Dr Gomolemo Moshoeu, said he was her best son-in-law.

“Great people like Gugu make history‚ while some of us watch history.”

She said Zulu died in Tanzania where her brother also died‚ but whose remains were never found.

“You will always remain my best son-in-law… no competition. I love you. Rest in peace. Letshego and Lelethu are in warm hands‚” she said.

Zulu’s sister Liyanda said her brother was her ‘side-kick’.

He was playful and cried with her when he watched her favourite television series with her.

“He took care of me. He said yes to my craziness. He had my back.”

Sello Hatanga of the Nelson Mandela foundation said Zulu’s legacy of greatness was tied to greatness because he died on Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

“When you meet Madiba tell him: ‘I died building the country of your dreams. I died restoring the dignity of a girl child...’.”

Zulu’s wife‚ Leshego‚ who was with him when he died‚ described him as an amazing man.

“I wasn’t supposed to get up on stage but I just want to say thank you‚” Letshego said.

“I was married to an amazing man. I shared him with all of you.”

When the Soweto Gospel choir played a musical rendition‚ Letshego got up and danced with her mother and mother-in-law.

At the service his best friend, Stevel Marc, saidZulu had promised him lunch on his return from Mount Kilimanjaro for the Trek4Mandela expedition.

He promised that he and his friend will take care of Zulu’s daughter Lelethu.

Friend Andre Ross told mourners that he had carried Zulu’s wife Letshego’s ring for eight days before Zulu proposed to her.

“You saw others and acknowledged them. You were a man who saw no colour. You championed humanity‚” Ross said of his friend.
