High-speed car chase nets R100k dagga haul

POLICE in East London arrested four men after a high-speed car chase on the N2 yesterday and confiscated dagga worth almost R100 000.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said the four were arrested at 1am during a routine stop-and- search operation by members of the Highway Patrol Unit attached to the East London Flying Squad.

Police were stationed at the second Brakfontein turnoff on the N2 and had been stopping vehicles coming from the direction of Transkei heading to East London.

Marais said police flagged down a white double-cab Mitsubishi Triton but the driver allegedly refused to stop so Warrant Officer Lynton Cox and Constable John Barends chased at high speed after the vehicle.

“The two officers managed to force the driver of the Triton off the road and arrested him,” said Marais.

Inside the vehicle, police found three additional occupants who appeared very nervous.

“The members searched the bakkie and found it to contain nine bags of dagga,” he said.

Marais said the men, aged between 30 and 40, were then arrested and the dagga was later weighed by police in their presence. It had a street value of R92300.

He said the suspects appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
