Well-known comedian Skhumba Hlophe is bringing his first one-man show to East London.

He will be performing at The Venue@Hemingways next Thursday.

From hosting a show with fewer than 10 people to capturing the hearts of South Africans, Hlophe has come far in his career.

East London comedy lovers first saw Hlophe as MC of the 99% Xhosa Comedy in 2013. Since then, he has become one of the most loved comedians and has four nominations for this year’s Comic Choice Awards, which takes place in September.

His nods are for the comic of the year, non-English comic, flying solo and breakthrough awards.

“The 99% Xhosa Comedy gave me a platform to introduce myself to a different audience and it has been great but I couldn’t keep doing the same thing for the rest of my life. Hosting my show is about growth,” he said.

Hlophe said he launched his one-man show titled It’s Ashubile last year

in November in Johannesburg, and he’s been amazed by the response.

Since then he has taken the show to Durban, Nelspruit, Witbank and Pretoria.

“As a comedian, it’s a humbling feeling to know that there are people who are willing to buy tickets and come and see your show. It’s every comedian’s dream, really.”

If he is not cracking jokes during his tour, Hlophe is on Kaya FM for his weekly feature where he reflects on what’s happening in the country with a twist of humour.

He has a role on SABC1’s Thandeka Diary and was also featured on the Mzansi Magic comedy Taxi Ride.

“I decided to do everything that’s comedy related, from the feature on Kaya FM to playing the character of Thandeka’s father on Thandeka’s Diary.

“I am busy doing another television show now that will be the funniest thing on our screen,” he said.

While Hlophe has already made a name for himself, he maintains that it is his hunger that keeps him going and pursuing more projects.

“I am still hungry for what I’m doing. This is hard work.”

Hlophe said people should expect nothing but pure humour on his upcoming show, from being teased to hearing about his real life stories.

“They’ve seen me perform for about 15 minutes but now it’s more than an hour.

“Nothing has changed but the amount of work that I’ve put into my show.

“When people leave after the show I want them to ask me when I’m coming again,” he said.

Hlophe said local comedian Tsepiso Nzayo would be the only comedian featured in his show.

“There is the host and Tsepiso only, no other comedians.

“I know Tsepiso and I trust that he will do a good job,” he said.
