SIVIWE Ngxiza’s memorabilia – a laminated academic performance certificate and bronze medal for road running – is all his family have left to remember him by.
The sport enthusiast, who also loved his books, was a promising sportsman “who won everything”.
Ngxiza’s grandfather Mandla Nothiyiwe, 68, was his number one fan. “This will always be the memory I have of my grandson, who if his life was not cut short could have been the best road runner in the country,” said Nothiyiwe.
“He loved his books, he was committed and was excellent in any sport he played.”
On his visit to the Western Cape in 2011, he won a medal for cross country and under his name he has a certificate of recognition for his overall academic performance for Grade 7 in 2009 at Mthatha’s Ncambele Junior Secondary school.

His family says the young man wanted to study towards a medical degree. His class teacher, Nobuhle Ndzabe, says he was good at both mathematics and physical science. His grandfather, Nothiyiwe said it was sad for the family as Ngxiza died as he was left with only one year left at high school.
Ngxiza died at Mandela Academ ic Hospital only three days before graduating from initiation school. —
