Kicking bootcamp butt real challenge

THE Eastern Cape Bootcamp Challenge (ECBC) returned on Saturday and tested the strength, stamina and sense of camaraderie of those East Londoners brave enough to undertake the course.

The bootcamp fitness craze has hit East London and with winter’s chill slowly creeping up, this might just be where you want to put yourself to avoid those extra “cold comforting” kilos.

Those who have attended any form of bootcamp in the past will know this is no child’s play.

Pulse Health Studio organisers Marc and Natasha Robertson with Katherine Nigris said although their bootcamp programme ran all year, they decided to host the ECBC now as a way of promoting fitness within the city.

“We aim to use the challenge as a way of cultivating a culture of fitness and health among the various exercise disciplines in the Eastern Cape.

We feel it supports the initiative of our province being the Adventure Province.

“Every major event always seems to go to the bigger cities and we wanted to start one here,” Natasha said.

More than just a fitness challenge, the ECBC caters for entrants of all ages and fitness levels.

The “elite” category is for the more fitness freak type while the “team” category allows for corporate entries as well as friend or family fun teams.

Saturday’s event included kid and teen challenges and a “sweating for the dress” competition which encouraged couples to battle it out to win their dream wedding.

A total of 20 elite entrants, 32 team entries, 11 kids and two engaged couples registered for this year’s challenge.

Entrants faced challenges which included flipping tractor tyres, climbing walls, lunging, running up and down hills, wading through water and net crawls, among other obstacles.

Supporters came out in numbers to cheer for friends and family while others set up stalls offering delicious eats for sale.

A total of R2100, raised from proceeds at the gate, was donated to the Greensleeves Place of Safety for Children, as well as food hampers from the stalls.

A number of local companies also came aboard to provide sponsorship and support.

“ a day of fitness, endurance, fun, mental and physical grit. People got dirty, they got wet. They were maxed out at the end,” Natasha said

“We would like to challenge Eastern Cape companies, schools and fitness studios to get more involved and to challenge each other. Let’s all get on board and keep the Eastern Cape fit and healthy.”—
