King William’s Town singer Sibulele Miti, who had all the vocal coaches on The Voice SA begging to work with her, has made it to the live show stages of the competition.

Miti’s blind audition last month wowed all the vocal coaches and in the end she chose to work with award-winning songstress, Lira.

The blind auditions are named as such as the vocal coaches sit with their backs to the singers in order to make decisions based solely on the performer’s vocal ability.

The second phase, called the battle rounds, sees each coach pit their singers against one another in pairs. At the end, the coach decides which of the pair stays on the show. The live shows – the final stage of competition – sees the public vote on who remains until there is only one winner.

On Sunday Miti battled Tshegofatso Makhafola, singing Eternal Flame by The Bangles. Miti said she struggled to compete against Makhafola due to their friendship.

The Zwelitsha-born singer said the song choice was not suitable for a battle.

“I’ve heard the song before but have never sang it. We both struggled preparing and even the way we performed it, it was more of a duet than a battle,” she said.

Miti said she was excited to still be in the competition even though her new friend was no longer part of it.

Vocal coach Kahn Morbee of The Parlotones said Miti had good range in her voice and had a lot to offer the show. Lira said she had enjoyed watching the two talented singers battle it out.

“They are both introverts and I can see they took notes. They got out of their comfort zone and were able to find the space where they could own the song and enjoy themselves,” she said.

Miti, a former Bhisho High School pupil, said she was honoured that Lira had chosen her.

“There is still a long way to go but I am excited about everything,” she said.

The live shows will start from April 17. Catch The Voice SA every Sunday on M-Net and a repeat on Saturdays on Mzansi Magic. — poliswap@dispatch. co.za
