EL ready to rock at new Easter festival

A NEW rock festival featuring the likes of Lira, Ringo and Khaya Mthethwa debuts in East London over the Easter weekend.

DStv iMonti Rock, featuring a crop of South Africa’s top musicians, takes places on April 19 and 20.

Festival organiser Songo Msimang said they had decided to bring the festival to East London because they believed the city had been left out of many other music tours.

“We decided to partner with DStv to make sure that cities which are usually overlooked get their turn at having the best shows. iRock is a rocking show,” he said.

Msimang said it had taken three months to plan the show at Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium and that news of the show had been well received in East London.

“There’s an awesome buzz. The lineup is one of the best of jazz, dance and gospel. We went all out for this show and it’s going to rock.”

The event has been divided into two categories: Saturday, April 19 sees a soulful house show with the likes of Ntando, Lira, Ringo, Berita, Zakes Bantwini, Donald, Thebe, Oskido, DJ Zinhle, DJ Cndo and Big Nuz.

The second day, Sunday, April 20, caters for gospel music fans and features artists such as 2012 Idols winner Khaya Mthethwa, Sifiso Ncwane, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Veliswa Skeyi and the Lusanda Spiritual Group.

DStv head of retention Colleen Goodman said music was an intricate part of their entertainment offering.

“In light of this, we decided to provide two separate shows to cater for varying music tastes ... Easter is a time for family and religion, and therefore it is important for us to provide a balanced offering and encourage the whole family to be a part of the festival,” she said.

Local artists will perform alongside the cream of the South African music industry in a “battle for the DStv iRock stage competition”.

Individuals or groups can record a minute-long digital clip of their performance and upload it on their Facebook page and then tag “Irockmusicfestival” to watch the video, or send a video via Whatsapp on 9735462766 with the keyword “DStviRock”.

DStv will then shortlist entries and choose a winner. The competition runs until April 10.

Gates at Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium open at 1pm on the Saturday and at 12pm on the Sunday.

Tickets, at R180 for Saturday and R150 for Sunday, are available from Computicket. VIP tickets cost R400.
