Gospel star chooses an EL studio for her eighth album

EAST LONDON-born gospel sensation Khanyisa Sabuka has for the first time in her 18 years in the music industry recorded an album in her home town.

Sabuka started her music career in 1995 as one of the lead singer of thenpopular East London gospel outfit, Youth With Mission. The group went on to record 10 albums in Johannesburg.

Sabuka launched her solo career in 2003 with her debut album Ezintweni Zonke, and has since blessed gospel lovers with her music across South Africa and neighbouring Lesotho and Swaziland.

She recorded seven albums in Johannesburg before starting work on her eighth album at TACC Studios in Southernwood.

Sabuka said she had always wanted to record in the Eastern Cape but earlier enquiries had not yielded any positive results and she ended up recording in Gauteng.

“I see no need to go to Johannesburg if we have studios like TACC that can give uswhat wewant … their equipment is very good,” she said.

“The backing singers I am using are also from East London. I have done a lot of live shows with them; they are good.”

Sabuka is working with experienced producer Siyabonga Hlekani, who produced the last album of Youth With Mission. He has also been producing the music of the Zwelitshabased group, the Lord Comforters.

“We have a common understanding. We respect each other and he listens to me and I also take his advice. I am impressed. I really like working with him,” she said.

The 14-track album will be released in mid-February. It will be released under her music label, Sibabalwe Music Productions.

She said the album was about promises of the Lord. “Gospel music is about giving people hope and reminding people of love of God for all mankind,” she said. “We face challenges every day and there is a lot of things that are happening, but the Lord promised us that He will be with us till the end of time.

“My wish is to revive those whose faith is on the edge,” she said. —
