Jackman touches down to work on new movie

‘Wolverine’ joins cast including Sigourney Weaver.

THE WOLVERINE is in South Africa. Aussie heartthrob Hugh Jackman is finally in the country to begin work on director Neil Blomkamp’s upcoming sci-fi flick.

The 45-year-old Jackman, who won a best actor gong at last year’s Golden Globe Awards for his role in Les Misérables, joins the cast rather belatedly. Work began months ago, when his castmates who include British actor Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame, Sharlto Copley and Die Antwoord’s Yolandi Visser and Ninja (Watkin Jones), were spotted (bar Copley) filming in Soweto last November.

Jackman posted a picture on his Instagram and Twitter account of him looking more Billy Ray Cyrus than Wolverine, what with his new hairdo.

He wrote in a caption: “Day 1 on Chappie! Vincent is born, rocking the mullet. Working with Neill Blomkamp in SA. This film is rad.”

Jackman’s co-star on the film, veteran Sigourney Weaver was spotted out at the Brightwater Commons, north of Johannesburg, yesterday afternoon.

Ashmund Martin, who admitted to “literally” dying when he spotted her getting out of the car and being escorted towards the flea market side, said her bodyguards told him Weaver was in the country on holiday. But we know this is not true.

Martin, who was leaving the mall after attending gym, said: “I’m such a fan of hers. I remember watching the movie Bobby, and even though she was a bitch in it, I thought she was just brilliant.

“I greeted her, and she was talking with a lady she was with, so she gave me a little look and acknowledged me.”

It’s unclear if the name of the movie has changed from the widely reported Chappie to Street Wise Professor , which was used on the doors of the actor’s trailers and some published material.

Whatever name is officially used, the movie will reportedly also star Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret. It is written by the same team that brought us District 9 – Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell.

The plot is centred around Chappie who, after being kidnapped by two criminals, becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family.

He is preternaturally gifted – but also happens to be a robot.

The movie, which will be distributed by Sony Pictures, is reportedly slated for release next year.

Meanwhile, Jackman will soon be on the big screen again, when X- Men: Days of Future Past is released.

No South African date has been announced for the premiere of the seventh edition in the X-Men franchise.

An eighth X-Men movie, called X-Men: Apocalypse, will reportedly be released in 2016.
