Music fest enthralls BCM public into the early hours

THOUSANDS of music lovers packed Buffalo Park stadium in East London at the weekend for the two-day DStv iRock Emonti Easter concert to hear stars such as Lira, Zakes Bantwini and Thebe.

While Saturday’s show was packed out, only about 300 people attended the Sunday gospel show.

The line-up of award-winning artists performed to an almost empty stadium.  S’fiso Ncwane of Kulungile Baba fame was the first act on Sunday afternoon. He was followed by 2012 South African Idols winner Khaya

Mthethwa, who sang a number of his Joyous Celebration songs and some traditional Christian songs.

Hlengiwe Mhlaba sang a few items and encouraged people to respect their pastors. Eastern Cape artists Veliswa Skeyi and Lusanda captivated the crowd. People were dancing and enjoying themselves.

Msimanga said: “We were disappointed with the turnout on Sunday, but it has been a learning curve and a chance for more research because we realised that the target market was either busy at their own churches or they had gone away.

“The target market would have turned out in huge numbers had it not been Easter.”

He thanked East Londoners and sponsors for supporting the event and promised to come back next year with a bigger and better show. — siyab@dispatch.co.za / vuyiswav@dispatch.co.za
