Madly funny show for EL

IT’S time to laugh out loud for comedy lovers as three “comic geniuses” join forces for the first time bringing The rise of the Insanity League to East London and Port Elizabeth.

The show – a comedy sketch like no other – is currently on at the Boardwalk’s Vodacom Amphitheatre in Port Elizabeth. It runs there until tomorrow and then moves to East London from Tuesday until Saturday March 16, at The Guild Theatre.

Making up the trio behind the new show are Aaron McIlroy – crazed purveyor of The Loser, The Golfer, DOF, Unplucked, @ Work and other solo block-busters – and Green Mamba and Black Mamba stars Ben Voss and John van de Ruit.

The rise of the Insanity League began on Voss’s veranda as a “caffeine-inspired statement of intent to create a sketch comedy show that would stun audiences and careen between the comedic poles of sheer genius and rank stupidity”, says McIlroy.

An actor-writer, Van de Ruit is author of the international best-selling Spud books and the smash hit movie of the same title. He received his masters’ degree in drama and performance studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

His highly successful Mamba stage shows in collaboration with Voss performed to sell- out audiences around South Africa as well as receiving numerous awards.

Voss is best known for dressing up in woman’s clothing.

Having been schooled at a majority black, co-ed school it was a logical progression that he should become a black woman – Beauty Ramapelepele.

He has a pedigree in sketch comedy too.

For those East Londoners who would go crazy without a mega-dose of local comedy, the dates to diarise are Tuesday March 12 until Saturday March 16. For Port Elizabeth – rush now because the show is on and will end tomorrow.

The East London show starts at 7.30pm with tickets at R120 every night except Tuesday March 12, when they are only R65 per person. For more information, contact: (043)743- 0704/5 or (041)582-3789.
