Going out with a bling

AFTER 12 years of playing the controversial and colourful Indian guy with a thing for bling-bling, comedian Kevin Perkins, who performs in East London tonight and tomorrow, is “retiring” his Mike Naicker character .

Perkins has visited East London for the past six years.

Michael Naicker, “the white Indian”, began as a small five-minute sketch in Perkin s’s stand-up routine.

Later, however, he decided to use it as a unique selling point in a cellphone marketing initiative.

The first Michael Naicker episode received 14000 calls in the first two days.

Perkins has travelled the world and performed in many shows using his Michael Naicker alter ego.

His new show, Chow 4 Now Show, will be his last show with Naicker.

“I am retiring the character this year. Mike is taking a sabbatical and that’s why the show is called Chow 4 Now Show.”

Perkins said Mike’s character had already said his farewells at other shows across the country.

“I’ve been to Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay and other small towns. This year I will be doing shows wherever I can to say goodbye to Mike,” he said.

Perkins described his show as a schizophrenic comedy .

“People who have never seen my show can expect to see me doing two voices on stage – my own and Michael’s.”

Perkins performs skits and songs disguised as a normal South African Indian. He jokes about souped-up cars, South Africa, and many other hilarious, sometimes raunchy topics.

“My shows are not for children. The characters are a bit rough around the edges. I’ve played them for years and people have come to accept them.”

He said fans could expect to hear some of their old favourites and an anthology of the past 12 years’ work. First-timers would also not be disappointed.

He said a highlight of all his shows was to see the crowd in stitches.

“I love seeing my fans letting their hair down and having a great time.

“It makes me happy,” he said, adding that his shows were all about making people forget their problems and enjoying the moment.

Perkins said he would also be going to London next month to do some shows.

Perkins’s show kicks off at 7pm on both nights, today and tomorrow at The Venue@Hemingways.
