Popular ‘Headline’ ends soon

AFTER six seasons of providing witty entertainment news on M-Net’s Mzansi Magic, Headline is coming to an end next month.

The show, which gave viewers a glimpse into the lives of local celebrities away from the limelight, and showed us the “real” human beings behind their careers, will not be commissioned for the seventh season.

M-Net’s head of communications Lani Lombard confirmed that Headline will be flighted for the last time on April 4. She said in the fast-paced world of television, it was not unusual to refresh channel content.

“Mzansi Magic is currently changing its line-up to create a general entertainment channel that will entice even more people to enjoy our unique local content offering.”

Lombard explained that Mzansi Magic valued the Headline production team and the faces of the show – Kuli Roberts and Trevor Gumbi. “We hope to work with them on new concepts in the future.”

Gumbi, who has been with the show for the past two-and-a-half years as presenter and member of the production team, said it had been a fun journey for him.

“I’ve learnt so much from the show and will forever be grateful to the producers for making me part of this journey,” Gumbi said this week, adding that he would now focus on producing more of his own television shows and working as a compère and comedian.

The Daily Dispatch has it on good authority that Gumbi is shooting a new drama series for the same channel titled Black Diamonds, but he declined to comment.
