SA couple take long way home in drive for charity

RETIRED couple Stan and Sally Hannath are going the distance in the Cape2Cape4Kids epic road expedition to raise funds for the planned Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg.

The Hannaths, from Cape Town, will hit the road in their Volkswagen T5 Caravelle on June 11 this year as they make their way from Europe to South Africa, across approximately 28000km and 27 countries, to raise much-needed funds for the children’s hospital.

Sally is a qualified speech and drama teacher and a voice trainer while Stan is retired from his job as managing director of a printing company. Now the two are dedicating their time to raising money for a good cause .

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund has initiated a project to build a children’s hospital in Johannesburg.

“There are only four dedicated children’s hospitals in the whole of Africa, servicing 450 million children. We desperately need another dedicated children’s hospital in South Africa, in Johannesburg in particular, as it’s the gateway city to Africa,” Stan said.

“The United Nations fourth millennium goal is to reduce child mortality, so our cause will go a long way to support this global objective.”

The proposed trip is expected to take up to five months, as the Hannaths are hoping to return in early November. They will be travelling from the northernmost tip of Europe, Noordkaap in Norway, to the southernmost tip in Africa, Cape Agulhus.

“We planned a trip to Ethiopia for some years and then decided if we were going there, it made sense to go on to Cairo and ship the vehicle back,” said Sally.

“We then chatted to some friends who had driven onwards to Noordkaap in Norway and then shipped home.

“So we thought, let’s do it the other way around and ship there and drive home, adding in Eastern Europe.”

Pat van der Merwe, trust manager at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, said the plans had already been completed and that they were planning on breaking ground in August this year.

“We’re deeply grateful for the contribution made by the Hannath s. They haven’t started just yet, but they have a long journey ahead of them and we support them completely,” she said.

“We want to open the hospital doors by the beginning of the year in 2015 and so far fundraising has been going well. The contribution made by Stan and Sally will also go a long way.”

The couple will be travelling through Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and finally South Africa. Those interested in donating or following their adventurous journey can visit www.cape2cape4kids.co.za and be updated on their progress.

“The only children’s hospital south of the equator is in Cape Town and services 250million children. Most of us have or know children we love and every donation is appreciated,” Stan said.

“100% of all donations received will be sent to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg.” —
